(M) Im not in favor of unnecessary wars. I dont think we should ever have invaded Iraq, and going into Afghanistan really didnt accomplish much, especially considering Osama bin Laden was found in Pakistan, but that doesnt mean I dont respect our troops. We can oppose pointless wars and still champion causes which help our veterans when they return home. The right has co-opted the slogan support our troops while simultaneously promote policies which hurt our troops. Theyve successfully run such a massive disinformation campaign to convince people they care about the troops, to the point that many troops actually believe the GOP is the party that supports them and cares about making sure they receive benefits, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Its time for liberals to become the champions of our troops, and making sure theyre cared for and that they dont end up homeless on the streets. Were already promoting and pushing for policies which will help veterans when they return home, we must start reminding people of that. When congress tried to pass a bill last year which would provide tax breaks and other incentives to companies which hire veterans the GOP opposed it, simply because President Obama supported it. Every Democrat voted in favor of the bill. When veterans come home and cant find work, its liberals who are fighting for social programs which keep them out of poverty, and make sure theyre able to eat. Not conservatives. Conservatives are the ones making cuts to food stamps and other social programs which many veterans rely on when they come home. The next time you hear someone claim they support the troops, but also the Republican Party, casually remind them that the Republican Party only cares about the troops when they need them for war, and doesnt give a damn about helping them afterwards. Dont forget we have the facts on our side, and remind them of the things I just mentioned.
