M.O.M. message for the week Everybody deserves Respect The people of Maui are a diverse group. Many of us bring different cultural viewpoints and that makes us the rich melting pot that we are. All people, no matter what their background, have something to offer. All people are precious and valuable and therefore entitled to be treated with human decency and respect. Yes, most of us all desire a civil society and that is why there are rules, guidelines and common sense to be followed. I think we all agree on this. The question that I am asking right now is, where is the human decency that cannot be legislated, but that we are all responsible for on an individual basis? I have seen videos and read many blogs as well as Facebook. I see attacks on people using angry means and using vulgar language. I see people trashing tourists for breaking their necks. I see people trashing some of our troubled mayoral candidates. I see people disrespecting and criticizing people they do not know anything about. If these people were your family or your friends, would you talk about them in such a mean manner? Please understand that we are all in this together. The anger and the hatred has got to stop and every one has the responsibility to monitor their own behavior. The person you bash today may be the person you need to help you tomorrow. Let’s focus our energy on solving our problems instead.
