MAGGIE SUE’S DOGMATIC THEOLOGY (1/12) The Implications of Baptism! I bet you haven’t stopped to think of all that Baptism really means for you or your loved ones for a while. Well, let me share with you a few things: Did you know that way back in the 13th century that the King of France, St. Louis IX insisted that the grand celebration of his birthday be on the day of his Baptism and not on his birthday proper? His argument was that Baptism was the beginning of a life that would continue for eternity in the everlasting glory of heaven. Isn’t that a cool way of thinking! Now that I think of it, I know my birthday is June 18, but I wonder if my Dad has ever baptized me? I need to talk with him about that! When people walk into the Catholic Church, they often dip the fingers of their right hand into the holy water font and bless themselves. This is to remind us of our own baptisms. So when you bless yourself with holy water, you should be thinking of the fact that you ARE a child of God, that YOU have been redeemed by the Cross of Christ, and that YOU have been made a member of God’s family, washed, cleansed and purified by the Blood of the Lamb. Also, this feast of the Baptism of Jesus marks the end of the Christmas Season and, at the very same time, the 1st Sunday in Ordinary Time. During the whole Christmas Season we celebrate and remember the Self-revelation of God through Jesus his Son. Through our baptism may we be a witness of who God is in our lives and be proud to be Catholic in all who we are, say and do in our lives!! I wonder if my Dad would baptize any squirrels if I could bring them into the church? Send your theological questions to maggiesueadam@gmail
