MAHALAPYE COUNCILLORS HAIL TIRELO SETSHABA Mahalapye Sub-district councillors have hailed government for Tirelo Sechaba programme, whichis improving the lives of the youth. Speaking during a sub-council meeting recently, councilors said the programme had enhanced the lives of the youth who were otherwise unemployed. Principal programme officer for Mahalapye Sub-district, Mr Thulani Caiphas said 952 youth had been attached to different government departments in the sub district. Mr Caiphas said there were 2 155 youth who had applied to be considered for the programme. He said not all the applicants had been absorbed due to placement opportunities in some villages which were few. He said in some villages there were no departments for Tirelo Setshaba participants to be assigned to and therefore limits a number of youth to be placed. Also, he said some departments require certain caliber of participants saying that was a challenge. Mr Caiphus nevertheless said Mahalapye Sub District had been given another batch to increase its intake of TSPs with 233 youth in each constituency adding that very soon they would absorb more youth to place in different departments. He said the programme was opened for young Batswana of the ages from 20-30 who were unemployed and were out of school. He nevertheless stated that only youth with no formal education and or up to diploma level could be admitted into the programme and that graduates were not eligible. He said contracts for Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) participants above the age of 30 would not be extended. Mr Caiphus acknowledged that there were teething challenges with payments. Currently, he said a contract had been made with Barclays Bank for participants to have their allowances transferred electronically so that they could receive their money on time. He also said an arrangement to use post offices and orange money service was still on the pipe line for participants who stay 40kms from the bank. Mr Caiphus encouraged Tirelo Setshaba participants to be committed on their assigned duties.He said they should use the chance to gain lifelong skills and should be enthusiastic in the work place. He urged them to be involved to make a significant contribution saying through dedication they would be more effective and that would keep them going for the long run. He also encouraged supervisors to be willing to assist the participants saying they were not to be used for odd jobs. He said they should be enabled to develop good work ethics so that they may be able to contribute to the development of the country. For his part councillor Baemedi Kudumane of Shakwe ward called for proper orientation of both the participants and their supervisors. Councillor Kudumane said orientation would make participants and supervisors to be at par with what is expected of them. (BOPA)
