How NOT to prime a porch railing (and how to do it quickly and easily): With the weather arriving this week I was under a lot of pressure to prime the new custom-built porch railing to protect it from getting soaked and warping. DONT use a brush. It took over 2 hours to paint one side of the part going down the steps. It was messy and tedious. And nearly impossible to get to the lowest underneath sections. I realized that maybe a painters mitt would work better. Yes and no. DONT go out and buy one. This sloppy, cheesy mess called SUPERTUFF by Trimaco is made in China. It sheds like crazy, loses its shape and after 5 minutes began disintegrating. Im returning it to Sherwin Williams today. DO improvise: make one yourself with a heavy rubber/vinyl work glove and an old cotton sock. I was able to do the entire porch and put a second coat on the first brush applied part in under an hour.
