MALACCA: The historical city’s iconic celebration – the Feast of San Pedro – has run into problems. The Portuguese Settlement Regedor, whose committee organises the celebrations, is claiming that a third party is interfering and jeopardising the preparation. “We are having serious problem in planning and preparing for the event with the meddling by this unrelated group with political influence,” said Regedor Peter Gomez. He said the interference could trigger a division among the villagers in the settlement. “The event this year has been politicised,” said Gomez, who appealed to the state government to find a quick solution to the impasse. “My team started planning for the event last October and now we are concerned that our efforts will go to waste,” he said. Gomez said the San Pedro festival would be celebrated for three days from June 27. Malacca Governor Mohd Khalil Yaakob and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron would be the main guest at the official launching of the event on June 28. The annual Feast of San Pedro honours St Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The festival commemorates the traditions of Portuguese fishermen of yesteryear. The event also showcases traditional dances and authentic Portuguese dishes. fw.to/sWAqFBb
