MALAYSIAN STUDENTS SITUATION IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to refer to the flood which hit Jammu and Kashmir, India. Due to continuous heavy rain, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was badly hit by heavy flood. 29 Malaysian students who were on a holiday trip to Jammu and Kashmir were reported to be trapped in the state, particularly in Srinagar and Pahalgam area. They are medical students at the Manipal Medical Campus in the state of Karnataka, mainly sponsored by JPA and MARA as well as private students. The students were split into two groups of which, ten female students reported to be in Pahalgam are not able to be contacted by the Malaysian Consulate. Another 19 students are currently trapped in a hotel in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Incessant rain and flood has submerged 450 villages and badly affected 2,000 other villages. The Malaysian Consulate in Chennai is currently in contact with various authorities to get the latest situation of the students as well as ensuring their safety. The Consulate reported that the students could only be contacted through Facebook since all other communication system has also been badly disrupted. The police in Srinagar has also been contacted and informed of the Malaysian students’ situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that it is important for all Malaysians students abroad, to engage themselves with the Embassy of Malaysia in the respective countries as well as reporting their travel out of the assigned state.
