MARTINSVILLE Veteran performers and newcomers to community theater are adding their comedic acting skills to the Merry MAC Players’ presentation of “Lend Me a Tenor,” which opens Friday at The Depot. The play’s story involves the arrival of the world’s greatest opera singer (Tito played by Todd Crickmore) in 1934 in Cleveland. The great singer has had a bit too much to eat and passes out just before his performance. The character Max is an aspiring singer who had expected to just escort Tito to the theater, but finds himself having to perform an unexpected role — one that he had dreamed of fulfilling. In the second act, a series of mistaken identities takes place after Tito awakens. Among the performers in the two-act, two-hour play is recent Martinsville High School graduate Katlyn Griffin. She plays the key role of Maggie. A student at Indiana University, this is her first role outside of high school, but she has previously performed in MHS productions of “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cinderella” and “Alice in Wonderland.” “Everybody in this is a joy to work with,” Griffin said. Daniel S. Watson plays Max, who is thrust into appearing as the famous tenor. He also has proposed to Maggie, who has resisted accepting his proposal. This play is directed by Stephen E. Foxworthy, who directed Watson in several plays at Covenant Christian High School. Watson will be a junior at the University of Indianapolis majoring in music education when classes resume this month. “I love to act,” Watson said. “I love to share experiences through acting. “I want to teach music and it is helpful to get in front of people acting.” Watson is delighted to be in the Merry MAC play. “This is so brilliantly written,” Watson said of playwright Ken Ludwig’s show. “It’s thoroughly masterful craftsmanship.” For director Foxworthy, this is a return to the Merry MAC. He has appeared as an actor in three pervious productions in Martinsville. Foxworthy’s current day job is as a theater and Bible teacher at Heritage Christian School. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 11 at The Depot, 210 N. Marion St., Martinsville.
