MATCH SUMMARIES September 28, 2013 Challenge Cup Group A Dundee Stars 6 Edinburgh Capitals 2 After Edinburgh took a first period lead they were no match to a Dundee team who went on to hit five without reply to effectively end the game as a contest. In a close fought encounter in the opening period there was only the one goal separating the teams and it came the way of the visitors as Jordan Steel put his team in front at 18.17. The second period was all one way traffic towars the Edinburgh goal. The game was turned around with two goals in less than a minute as Nico Sacchetti at 23.15 and the John Dolan at 24.01put the Stars in front. Two further quick goals from Sacchetti with his second at 28.36 and then Rory Rawlyk at 29.19 put the hosts in command. When Billy Bagron netted at 35.42 the game was over. The teams traded goals in the third period with Dundee getting their sixth at 48.06 from Tysen Dowzak. The Capitals goa late consolation as debutant Lea Reaney netted at 56.44. As for Braehead this was their third straight loss in this seasons Challenge Cup. Despite out shooting their opponents 2 to 1 in the first period the home side failed to find the net as Clan goaltender Kyle Jones stopped everything that came his way. As a result of this the period ended goalless. The opening goal came at 24.47 as Andy Contois put the home side in front. At 32.33 Matt Nicholson and Chris Frank were handed minor for roughing penalties with the latter getting thrown out the game on a match for head butting. This gave the home side a five minute powerplay. However, it was the visitors who netted the next goal as Ash Goldie with a shorthanded goal at 32.42 got the visitors back on level terms. The game could have gone either way but it was a dream debut for Rok Pajic as he netted the game winning goal for the Flyers at 51.40. As a result the Panthers moved into second place and pushed Giants down into third. It was honours shared between the Panthers and Giants after the opening session. The home team took the lead with a strike from Brandon Benedict at 8.05. However, this lead was short-lived as the visitors were back on level terms as Chris Higgins netted at 9.58. With the second period looking to end goalless the Panthers went on the powerplay and with 42 seconds remaining Chris Caprao gave the home side the lead once again. The game was level for a second time at 56.15 as Mark Garside netted for the visitors. Before you could blink the home fans were on their feet as 16 seconds later Matt Francis found the net with what turned out to be the game winner. With the visitors hitting four straight by the end of the second period the hosts never recovered from that set back despite netting twice in the third. It was the Steelers who went in after the opening twenty minutes with a two goal lead. They opened the scoring with a goal from Jeff Legue at 10.07. They doubled their lead with only 26 seconds remaining in the period as Drew Fata netted on the powerplay. A brace from Robert Dowd in the second period increased the Steelers lead as he netted at 27.44 and then again on the powerplay at 29.21. The Devils got on the board at 37.12 with a strike from Mark Richardson. With 55 seconds gone in the third period Cardiff pulled back another as Andrew Lord netted with a 5 on 3 powerplay. Despite getting this early strike the home side could not make any further in roads and the Steelers took the points.
