MATT names sub-committee to examine claims of political interference at the T&T Guardian newspaper The Executive Committee of the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago has finalized its subcommittee to ascertain what transpired when conflicting information was released on behalf of MATT by the former executive during the recent allegations of political interference at the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper. The Committee is expected to report on the processes used and recommend structures and protocols to be put in place to avoid a recurrence of a similar situation. The Committee will be spearheaded by veteran journalist Tony Fraser with the two other members being former MATT President Dale Enoch and former Journalist and former Communications Manager at RBC Royal Bank, Paul Charles. Court Protocol Officer, Jones P Medeira has agreed to advise the Committee when necessary. The Committee has been given a deadline of October 12th to deliver its report to the MATT executive. The results of the investigation will be presented to the MATT’s membership at a General Meeting to be held on October 19th at a location to be finalized. MATT underscores that the investigation will not be centered on whether there was political interference at the Guardian but rather the way information was disseminated by the former Executive and protocols to guide future executives. The Executive has also set up a subcommittee to find a permanent home for the MATT. At this time MATT depends on the generosity of various media houses to hold its executive and general meetings. The committee will seek among other things international grant funding for this project. This committee will be chaired by former diplomat Mark Regis and will include veteran journalist Lennox Grant and President of the Energy Chamber Dr.Thackeray Driver. President of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers Wesley Gibbins will serve as an advisor to the committee. Further developments regarding the business of the MATT will be presented at next month’s General Meeting. - Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago
