MEDIA ALERT: Petition to be delivered to NSW Ministers signed by 14,500 NSW residents to support young people with disabilities living in residential aged care homes Event: Paul Raciborski, President of Brain Injury Association (BIA) NSW, submits petition to Hon. Andrew Constance, NSW Minister for Finance and Services, Hon. John Ajaka, NSW Minister for Ageing and Disability Services and Hon. Victor Dominello, Minister for Citizenship & Communities and Aboriginal Affairs Date: Tuesday 27 August, 9am Venue: Steps of Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney Background: Today there are over 2,300 young people with a disability living in residential aged care facilities in New South Wales, over 50% of which have an acquired brain injury (ABI). Many are living in hospital beds waiting for a permanent home and hundreds more may be forced to live in aged care nursing homes due to no current alternative. BIA NSW wants to highlight this issue to the Government following NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell’s election promise he made in March 2011, stating that if any NSW constituents brought him a petition containing 10,000 signatures, he would personally table it before both Houses of the NSW Parliament to be debated. BIA NSW has done more than that, generating over 14,500 signatures. Once the petition is presented, a combined submission will be lodged with others from the disability and health sectors outlining ways the Government can address this issue long term. This will include re-instating previous funding and developing a more integrated approach across Government departments and NGOs.
