MEDICAL ALERT: Sierra Leone-Ebola Virus Update. Sierra Leones Ministry of Health has notified WHO of 1 case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) from Koindu, Eastern Province, confirmed at the national reference laboratory. This area borders Gueckedou, Guinea where an EVD outbreak has been ongoing since May 2014. Four deaths from unspecified causes have also occurred in Koindu, Eastern Province, however this is the first confirmed case of EVD in Sierra Leone. Fruit bats are considered to be the natural hosts of Ebola virus. Travelers should be advised that transmission is via direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of infected primates or acutely ill patients.
