MEMOIRS and STORIES The only job I ever got fired from was being a housekeeping aide at North Memorial Hospital; sadly, where I volunteered. This was my "resignation" letter: 4143 Girard Ave. No. Mpls., MN 55412 October 21, 1986 Mr. Richard Holm North Memorial Medical Center Personel Department Dear Mr. Holm: Last night, October 20, 1986, I was forced to resign my position as housekeeping aid. This came as a great shock to me. I was not aware of any significant problems with my job performance. Mike Burke, my supervisor, cited poor job performance as the cause. He said it was fully documented and had made up his mind that I could either quit or be fired, so I quit, but, really, I was fired. Working as a housekeeping aid, I had worked on several floors. In the past I had always received good remarks about my work. I was transferred to the 6th floor of Oakdale 1 because Housekeeping had received lots of complaints about that floor. A few days later I was given a performance review. My supervisor said he was extending my probationary period because I worked overtime a few nights. It should be noted that for any new worker, to the 6th floor, its duties are difficult to complete in the time allotted. All other comments were satisfactory. I would ask my supervisor every night if there were complaints on my floor and he almost always said there were none. I thought I had developed a good system to get the work done. The complaint book, when available for me to review, indicated no significant problems on my floor. At group meetings a master complaints sheet would be reviewed by all housekeepers. My floor had few complaints. My history with the hospital goes back many years. As a Junior Volunteer, I received both verbal and written praise for my work. I an still a hard worker, punctual, and reliable. I enjoyed my housekeeping job. Now my relationship with the hospital has been abruptly terminated, and perhaps unfairly so. I am saddened by this tragic finale to years of honest and dedicated work. In fairness to myself, and those who follow me, perhaps the housekeeping job on Oakdale’s 6th floor should be reviewed. I can’t help but feel I have been victimized. The supervisor has an unrealistic expectation of 6th floor job performance given the time allotted for the task. Was termination really necessary? Couldn’t I have been given a better idea that there was a problem all along? Could I have been transferred to another floor to see if anyone else could do a complaint-free job of the 6th floor before firing me? It is with much sadness and regret I enclose my North Memorial ID card. Sincerely,
