MIDSUMMER CELEBRATION STUFF: Today we celebrate the midsummer here in Sweden. Our country is far up in the north and in the very north of our country we have midnight sun now in summer time. That means the sun doesn’t set at all. It’s up for several weeks and doesn’t set during the night. In the winter it’s the opposite, the sun doesn’t rise over the horizon and it’s very dark. But now it’s summer and it’s light. Here in the south where I live the sun set also in the summer but it’s still light all night long. As this is the time of the year when it is as light as it ever gets we celebrate this, the light, the summer. Today we take a very big pole and decorate it with flowers, race it up and then we dance around what we call the midsummer pole, we play some games like jumping in bags races, run with a spoon with a potato and such games, we eat traditional Swedish herring, strawberries for dessert, have a vodka shot, or maybe two, or two plus, and try to sit outside late in the night and just talk and enjoy. Let’s forget about the darkness for a while, let’s enjoy, let’s try to bring light into our souls, let’s go out and dance!!
