MINTO ROAD HOSTEL A writer by pen name கடுகு (symbalising very small) Shri PS Ranganathan a very good friend of mine wrote a book on the above title. The entire story of the book was about having his residence nearer the Railway Station. He had his govt. accommodation allotted to him in Minto Road Hostel which was more or less a stone’s throw from the New Delhi Rly. Station. Usually trains from the South departs in the late evening or arrive early morning. Those who have to receive some relatives the next morning, would come and stay in கடுகு”s house the previous day evening and stay in his house (particularly in winter). Next day morning they would take a cup of coffee and go to the station by walk. Those who want to catch the train in the evening would come to his house in the morning hours itself and conveniently go to the station just before the departure of the train. Sometimes, Shri கடுகு would be requested to hand over a small packet to some friends leaving by the evening train or collect some packets sent to them by their relatives from Chennai. Since the rly. Booking office was only at the rly. Station in those days, he would be asked to stand in the Q line and they would come and join when the counter opens. In more cases he would be requested to collect the packet from the Chennai passenger and deliver the same to him during lunch hour in the UNI Canteen (I have already written about this Canteen in these columns). Since Shri கடுகு was so popular and a good Samaritan, he would not refuse any such requests from his friends.
