MIX DIGITAL 2014: Digital Texts and The New Publishing SYMPOSIUM and MAKING DAY CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS Bath Spa University/The Writing Platform Conference, 4-5 July 2014 Deadline for Abstracts: 20 January, 2013 Submit to Lucy English: [email protected] Bath Spa University is co-hosting the third MIX DIGITAL conference, once again in partnership with The Writing Platform. Friday 4 July will be a one-day Symposium that includes papers and presentations. Keynotes will include Adrian Hon of Six to Start, the narrative games company that made Zombies! Run, and Saturday 5 July will be a Maker Day of hands-on workshops. This year the theme of MIX will be Digital Texts and The New Publishing. New forms of storytelling are proliferating from narrative games, story apps, participatory web projects, location-responsive texts to books as networked objects and myriad other forms. The majority of these new forms of literature are not ‘published’ in any traditional sense of the word. The rise of self-published ebooks has seen a corresponding opening up of the digital space to creators and storytellers who are using digital tools to find new ways of engaging audiences. Publishers themselves are grappling with this space as more creative works emerge that challenge the traditional notion of publishing, for example this year’s Man Booker long list included a novel available in print, or as a digital text with embedded media. The papers and presentations will be divided into three streams – New forms of Publishing, Curating and Gate-keeping; Distributing, Discoverability and Search; and Audience, Participation and Interactivity. We also welcome papers on and presentations of creative works that focus on making and publishing digital work, including fiction, e-poetry, video poetry; mobile, locative, and site specific forms; digital non-fiction, games, text-based digital art, and other electronic, hybrid forms. Papers and presentations that focus on pedagogy and pedagogical issues in any of these fields are also welcome. Another call for creative works to be displayed on the new Digital Wall at Bath Spa University will be forthcoming. Papers will be published in a peer-reviewed e-journal; further details to be announced in 2014. Conference Committee: Katharine Reeve (BSU), Lucy English (BSU), Kate Pullinger (BSU), Maggie Gee (BSU), and Donna Hancox (QUT). Abstracts of up to 300 words should be sent to [email protected] by 20 January 2014.
