MOVIES OUT THIS WEEKEND: ROSEWATER Gael Garcia Bernal plays Newsweek journalist Maziar Bahari, who was brutally interrogated in Iran for 118 days after the 2009 Iranian election protests. Rosewater was how he recognized his torturer . . . because that was the smell on his hands. Jon Stewart directed it, and also wrote the screenplay, which is based on Baharis memoir And Then They Came For Me. Jons pretty passionate about the project, because The Daily Show had a correspondent in Iran for the elections, and did a skit where he was posing as an American spy . . . and asked fellow journalist Bahari if he was a terrorist. After Bahari was arrested and accused of actually BEING a spy, the Iranians were so desperate for evidence that they served up the clip from The Daily Show as their so-called proof.
