MP Anil Kumar Veteran Air Marshal S Ramdas Pays a Tribute Dear Friends, I am sending this to some of you who knew the late Fg Offr M P Anil Kumar (17700) F(P), some who may have heard of him and also some who had never known of his existence. Anil Kumar was born in Kerala on 5th May 1964, was educated in a Sainik School near Trivandrum, and joined the 65th Course at the NDA. He was adjudged the best Air Force cadet when he passed out of the NDA. He was later commissioned in the IAF as a fighter pilot and adjudged best in aerobatics. He joined 3 Sqn in Pathankot, where he flew MiG-21s. He was involved in a very tragic motorcycle accident on 28 Jun 1988 when he was returning from the squadron after a cancelled night flying programme and went into a newly installed boom barrier, which had been installed while he was on T/D earlier in the week, and about which he had no knowledge. The accident left him totally paralysed from the neck down. A classic quadriplegic case. Needless to say he was shattered, but he soon made up his mind that he was not going to wallow in self pity. He spent the rest of his days in the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Kirkee, Pune. He had an indomitable spirit and a brilliant mind. He taught himself to use the computer which he operated with a long stylus held in his mouth. He used to write articles in the newspapers on a range of subjects. He was an avid reader and could discuss current affairs, air force matters and a host of other subjects as well as, if not better than, most people. I could go on and on and on, but I would not be able to do justice to this wonderful man who was such a great inspiration to all whom he met. It was his 50th birthday on the 5th May, this year and a large number of people had gone to visit him at the PRC. However, they found that he had been admitted to the nearby Military Hospital a few weeks earlier. His condition was eventually diagnosed as Acute Myeloid Leukemia.and rapidly deteriorated. He eventually passed away at 0815h on Tue, 20th May 2014. The funeral was held at the Bopodi Crematorium (near Kirkee) at 1030h on Wed, 21st May and was attended by a wide variety of service personnel and civilians who paid rich tributes to him. It was so moving to see how many lives he had touched. He was indeed a great man. May his soul Rest in Peace. Regards................................ Shashi Ramdas
