MT GOP To Lewis: Return Taxpayer Dollars Used For Campaign Today, the Montana Republican Party called on John Lewis to return taxpayer dollars improperly used to fund a campaign trip to Washington, D.C. Between July 15, 2013 and July 17, 2013, John Lewis billed taxpayers a total of $1,440.99 for a campaign trip to meet with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Lewis reimbursed himself $995.44 in taxpayer dollars for staff transportation, $390.73 for staff per diem, and $54.82 for staff incidentals.(Source: Report of the Secretary of the Senate, P. B-451, April 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2013) According to a Billings Gazette article, “He spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday [July 16th and 17th] meeting with the DCCC. Lewis was on a plane trip back to Montana Wednesday and couldn’t be reached for comment late Wednesday.” Roll Call and a Montana teacher and blogger also reported on Lewis’ campaign trip. “John Lewis is in clear violation of election law by using taxpayer dollars to fund a campaign trip to Washington, D.C.” said Montana Republican Party Chairman Will Deschamps. “Lewis should immediately reimburse Montana taxpayers for his campaign travel costs and apologize for his unethical behavior.” # # # Copyright © 2014 Montana Republican Party, All rights reserved.
