Chopper: How did you start playing? Michael Pennacchio: I started out playing the bass, actually. I always wanted to play an instrument and when my friends had started this punk band back in high school it was just the kick I needed. I bought this cheap Hartke and started learning Sublime songs. Chopper: Who was your first and greatest personal influence on music? Michael Pennacchio: I would say my family. None of them were musicians or anything but, there was always music playing in my house. I would wake up in the morning and my dad would have Q104.3 on the radio dial and I would go into school singing songs from bands like The Doors and Pink Floyd. When I got home my older sisters would play tapes they got from their friends and Id be rocking out to Nirvana or Sonic Youth in Jnco Jeans. I was lucky to be exposed to so many different genres at a young age… I mean every now and then I had to suffer when my mother would listen to Randy Travis but, you have to take the good with the bad. Chopper: What and/or who influenced your songs/writing style? Michael Pennacchio: Definitely the local musicians Ive had a chance to meet along the way. Of course there are bands like The National and The Mountain Goats that I like stylistically but, it was really the encouragement from people like Petey Hop, Mishti, Mani Cregan and many others that, when I listened to them or their advice, kept me progressing as a writer. Chopper: Describe your songwriting process? Michael Pennacchio: Wow, tough question… It changes all the time. When I started writing music I didnt know much about the guitar or theory and I was learning it around the poetry I had written. I would take a piece, learn some chord shapes or a new mode and run with it. Now, its a bit of give and take, Ill be working on becoming better at my instruments and what Im learning will inspire a story or a theme. Sometimes Im with friends or meditating and the song hits me and I have no other choice but, to let it out; I enjoy that feeling of being the conduit and allowing the song to just pass through me, the struggle comes from allowing myself to be that open. Chopper: What’s the name of your new CD? Michael Pennacchio: Better In The Morning Chopper: What or who inspired you to do this project? Michael Pennacchio: I had a lot of songs I wanted to get out there to my friends and the world and decided Ive already waited too long, this has to happen. But, I cant take all the credit, I owe a lot to Geoff Hartwell who believed enough in my writing to take on the project. He did such an incredible job of bringing out the best in me and the music. Chopper: How much time do you rehearse/gig? Michael Pennacchio: I think its easier to calculate the time I dont spend practicing or writing and usually that time involves a sandwich or a beer. As for gigging, I hope to be doing a lot more of that! Ill eat less sandwiches. Chopper: How do fans stay abreast with your gigs and purchase your music & merch? Michael Pennacchio: They can find all of that on my fan pages: reverbnation/michaelpennacchio or facebook/looking4michaelsmusic. Better In The Morning will be available on iTunes, cdbaby and amazon, January 1st 2014. Chopper: Any sponsors or endorsements? Michael Pennacchio: Not yet, but Martin, I love your guitars and if you wanna show me some love Im all about the love. Chopper: What’s next? Feel free to take this time to add anything you want to say. Michael Pennacchio: More Music!! Im still writing and right now, Im working on some songs with a friend and it feels great to be collaborating. Chopper: Now that we’re done….What’s your favorite drink? Michael Pennacchio: A good scotch with two ice cubes. But, usually I can only afford a PBR. Also, check out The Sunday Nite Jam Sessions and the MTK Thursday Nite Supper Club Jams.
