MUSIC HISTORY 101 JULY 21, 2002 - Producer GUS DUDGEON (b. September 30, 1942), who worked with artists including Elton John, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Kiki Dee, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, The Strawbs, XTC, and Joan Armatrading, was killed at age 59 in a car accident near Reading, England, together with his wife Sheila. They had been driving along the M4 motorway on their way home from a party when Gus fell asleep at the wheel of the Jaguar XK8 convertible, crashing down an embankment at speed and ending up in a ditch. In a statement, John said he was devastated by the news, describing Dudgeon as an incredibly talented producer and a very dear friend. I will miss him terribly. Dudgeon began his career as a tea boy at Olympic Studios, and by his early 20s was an in-house engineer at Decca Records studios in West Hampstead. Early sessions there included recordings for Marianne Faithfull with producer Andrew Loog Oldham and session guitarists Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin. The first album on which Dudgeon was listed as producer was rock act Ten Years Afters self-titled set on Deram. In 1969, he produced David Bowies first hit, Space Oddity, and, later, albums by such artists as Chris Rea, Lindisfarne, and XTC, for whom he oversaw 1992s Nonsuch. Dudgeon and John, along with Bernie Taupin and Steve Brown, founded The Rocket Record Company in 1973, and Dudgeon also served as producer for such one-off projects as the tribute set to John and Bernie Taupin, Two Rooms.
