As a tribute to his legacy, friends and family have created a foundation in Derek’s memory to provide educational scholarships and resources to local youth wanting to study the percussion traditions of Cuba, Brazil and the African diaspora. To honor Derek’s memory local musicians and dancers have come together tonight performing music and dance that was dear to Derek’s heart. Although Derek was best known for his work with Pink Martini, he played with many other groups from the Portland area and was instrumental in starting a few groups of his own. These groups reflect his diverse musical interests and passions. He was also an inspiration for many musicians who might not have discovered these traditions were it not for his influence. Many of these same musicians have gone on to develop substantial careers of their own. Two of the groups that Derek started, Go Gringo Go and Free Beat Nation will be featured tonight as well as a song Martin Zarzar and Derek co-wrote, Cascabel. When Derek was between tours with Pink Martini he made it a priority to support other local groups, often times sitting in with them and blessing them with his inimitable percussive prowess. Some of these groups include Doo Doo Funk All Stars, Pura Vida, The Danny Romero Trio, amongst many others. The Derek Rieth Foundation wants to thank each and every one of you for your support, enthusiasm, help and hearts! Tonights benefit lays the‘ FOUNDATION’ of the foundation. All proceeds generated from this event, as well as the generous donations taken in thus far, help to cover the start up costs of the Derek Rieth Foundation. As we move into 2015 and towards the actualization of the foundation and its physical presence in our community you can ALL have a sense of pride in your contribution. -The Beat Goes On- The Derek Rieth Foundation.
