MY Colorado! September 30 - Morning As we knew the weather was going to turn bad and possibly rain or snow that afternoon, we set out from Breckenridge and traveled across Vail pass headed toward Glenwood Springs to the famous Hanging Lake trail along Grizzly Creek in Deadhorse Creek Canyon. At the bottom in Glenwood Canyon, the highway and railroad tracks run next to the Colorado River as all wind through the canyon. Quite beautiful to see! This is a short trail (1.2 miles) but challenging as you gain 1000 feet in that short distance. Much of the trail is cut rock that looks like a staircase (continuous Stairmaster workout). It was cool and misty in the darkness of the canyon. Lots of waterfalls and bridges during the climb. At the end of the trail, you have to climb a STEEP stairs craved into the rock. You must hold on to a rail embedded into the rock in this sharp, narrow turn that wraps around the cliff wall. The other side of the rail is a steep drop. Footing is very important! You finally reach the prize…Hanging Falls. The emerald green water is amazing. Rainbow trout are in the water. This is a beautiful ecological habitat. Worth the hike! However this hike is not recommended for geezers and wheeziers or for those afraid of cliffy drops or without good balance!
