Mabels Lamentation Anytime I see a posh car, I do not envy the owner, I envy the manufacturer! I ask myself, so a human being like me made this? Whenever I see beautiful art works, technological inventions, exciting movies, impressive structures etc, I dont envy the users, I envy the producers!!! I marvel at such level of creativity a mortal man like me can exude! Its so sickening when we pride ourselves on the things we have/use. I wonder what we expect the manufacturers to do. The way some car owners look at pedestrians sometimes will make you to wonder if its a crime to be walking! Sincerely, its a shame on me to pride myself on things that my mates or even younger ones produced while Im low on creativity. Id rather be challenged than be proud. Nigeria is a country of consumers! Take it or leave it! We are more of consumers than producers. We pride ourselves on the things our money can buy, and not on what we can produce. Need to wonder why the level of corruption is high? If a ban is placed on importation, majority of us will run down! Why? Because we depend on foreign stuffs for everything! Name it! Clothes, phones, laptops, cameras, electronics, and even movies!!! We watch foreign movies than our own Nollywood because we produce pathetic story lines that are insult to intelligence. Thank God for the likes of Kunle Afolayan, Tunde Kelani, Femi Babalola, Tade Ogidan and few others who still give us hope. Nigerian youths, whats our problem? Please lets stop priding ourselves on our possessions, and lets begin to THINK! Youths in other climes are competing in creativity! Lets stop giving environmental excuses. Why are we not birthing solutions, inventions, or innovations? Why are we dependent? What if Nigeria was the only country the world had? Nigeria is a home of intellectuals that celebrate acquiring avalanche of certificates without impact! We pride ourselves in our First class certificate without a Third class achievement. Whats the point in having a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and you cant even repair your own car yourself, let alone producing one? What good is knowledge without application? Lets start challenging and encouraging ourselves! Consumerism has to stop! Lets start thinking! Who says a Nigerian cannot produce a phone thats more sophisticated than iPhone 6? Ehn? Who says that a Nigerian cannot produce the best car? I want to be one of the most creative writers that ever walked the earth! You? I know we are trying but we are not doing enough! Lets get thinking! Enough of consumerism! Nigerian youths!!! We can do it! Its not enough to have a First Class!
