Mackay ASSI conference saw the effects of positive community cohesion for over seven ASSI community organisations in coming together to make our situation better. This has been spoken by a number of community leaders from the Mackay region. watch video: https://facebook/video.php?v=10203459799760882&set=vb.1389734062&type=2&theater Poem titled ‘WANTOK had a breakthrough’ … written and spoken by Veronica Griffin from ‘Kanaka Voices’ newly formed community organisation Mackay Queensland. Remember all of you the date the time the place … when Wantok had a break through END Dear Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) community leaders, organisations friends and family, A great appreciation and thank you to Fay - Beth in putting together this great flyer. Just wanting to confirm and share an insight to the formation of this process. Please see attached the invitation notice to attend the 1st session for feedback on our National Australian South Sea Islander Association (NASSIA) 1st DRAFT constitution. This one day session will be facilitated by our pro bono law firm Gilbert & Tobin. (ASSI are a recognised as a distinct cultural group in Australian by the 1994 Commonwealth. They are specifically the descendants of the blackbirding trade between 1847 to NSW and 1863-1904 to QLD). The purpose of such a meeting is necessary in terms of ensuring we as a community group follow good governance practices (common law) ensuring that democratically our constitution has been considered by the ASSI community from a national perspective as best we can. Therefore please spread the word and email widely via your database links, post and word of mouth where possible. The mandate to bring the draft constitution back to the community came from a national community request at the Mackay ASSI meeting in march 2014 (namely Wantok 2014) where a National Governance Working Group was elected and the baton handed over from ASSI.PJ giving the responsablity and coordination for the final stage developments of a national constitution adoption and a compliant delegate election process to be met by that group which is chaired by Greg Sutherland from Mackay. The delivery of the next two sessions are important and are necessary in terms of accountability and under common law until such time our constitution is adopted.
