Major row over CBI chiefs rape remark Womens groups say the remark suggests that rape, like gambling, is an unalterable occurrence. Ranjit Sinha, director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, is in the eye of the storm on his bizarre comment on rape. While supporting the legalization of betting in sports, Sinha said, If there are lotteries in states, if we can have casinos in tourist resorts, and if government can declare schemes for voluntary disclosure of black money, then what is the harm if we legalize betting? But then, in a shockingly insensitive analogy, the CBI director said, Above all, do we have the enforcement agencies? If you cant enforce it, it is like if you cant prevent rape, enjoy it. It is better to legalize it and earn some revenue rather than throwing up your hands. No sooner had these remarks been made from a public platform where the topic of discussion was Ethics and integrity in sports, there was uproar. Many senior CBI officials jumped into the fray trying to shield the CBI chief, stating that his comments had been taken out of context and that Sinha had no intention of trivializing as serious a matter as rape. However, womens groups, lady lawyers and women politicians have slammed the CBI directors remarks and asked him to apologize and said that he should be prosecuted.
