Make-A-Wish is the legacy of Chris Greicius, a 7-year-old boy from Phoenix, AZ. His wish to be a police officer set in motion a phenomenon that would create an unprecedented kind of charity...a charity that has now granted close to 300,000 wishes worldwide (MAW America and international affiliates), with more than 8,000 granted in New Jersey alone! In fact, every 38 minutes a wish is granted somewhere in the United States. Experiences that may never have taken place had it not been for the men and women in law enforcement in AZ, back in 1980, who made young Chris wish happen. Ever since our founding, we have continued this strong, foundational bond with law enforcement officials, at every level - federal, state, municipal. We are proud of our heritage, indeed ever grateful to these men and women who serve to protect us, and to whom our children look upon as heroes, just as young Chris did. This week, here in New Jersey, we are deeply saddened, and shakened, at the horrific and senseless killing of one of these servant heroes - Police Officer Melvin Santiago of the Jersey City Police Department. Tonite, our castle is darkened as we continue to keep Officer Santiagos family in our thoughts and prayers, as well as the brave men and women of the JCPD, and the entire city of Jersey City. Surely our thoughts are squarely on the safety of law enforcement everywhere!...and the immense gratitude we hold for their service to our safety. Our lights will remain off until Friday, when we join the campaign Lights On For Officer Santiago, as encouraged by the organization 53 Hours, who state Every 53 hours a police officer pays the supreme sacrifice. On that day, our castle will be lit in blue.
