Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright…wisdom will enter your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you. (Proverbs 2:2-11) Only through seeking Holy Spirit can mere man receive understanding of spiritual things. The human race can in our flesh absent from God attain information – endless information. However, to gain true understanding, we must humble ourselves and ask; acknowledge that we cannot have comprehension without Him giving it and that we must first ask in order to receive. Understanding of the things of the spiritual realm is completely supernatural. Ephesians 1:17-18 read, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ…may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him; the eyes of your understanding be enlightened.” Wisdom, revelation, discernment, and understanding are spirit (Holy Spirit), which means it is nothing of the natural. It is to accompany the information you already have. Knowledge precedes understanding. Information (spiritual or physical) without the gift of Holy Spirit leading and understanding is worse than useless—it is dangerous. ~ excerpt from Looking for God, by A.V. Wolf
