Making Headlines 100 Years Ago Today: Mead worker James Thacker, 137 W. Fourth St., died when he fell into a “cauldron of boiling water.” The accident occurred at 12 pm when Thacker climbed onto a platform in the incinerator room, in an attempt to throw a belt from a large wheel. Thacker tried to kick the belt away from the wheel but his foot became tangled and the motion of the wheel threw him from the platform and into the vat of scalding water – which was only partially covered; There was excitement in Clarksburg with accusations against James Elmer “Sut” Johnson, who was accused by Mrs. Clem Hutton of stealing her chickens; “John Byers Got Cut Again” read the headline. It seems Byers and his son-in-law Raymond Henness were on their way to their home in Union Township when the decided to stop at Adler’s Saloon on the Frankfort Pike for a drink. The two proceeded to get drunk before moving outside and getting into an argument, at which time Henness pulled a knife and cut his father-in-law across the wrist and hand. Apparently this was Byers’ second time as the victim of a knife, having previously had his throat cut.
