Malawi Housing Corporation has taken over management of Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre from the Blantyre City Council. In an e-mailed response to a questionnaire on the development, MHC Deputy Chief Executive Officer Wanangwa Mbereka said on Monday this has been “by way of re-entry of the lease.” He said MHC wants to manage the Park properly to match the theme of a park in the modern world, as opposed to just maintaining it as an open space. Mbereka said the Park will be used for recreation purposes with modern facilities and a high class amusement centre. BCC Chief Executive Ted Nandolo said he was not readily available for an interview when contacted. The park once hosted Pope John Paul II, the late former head of the Catholic Church in the world, during his ever visit to Malawi in 1989. - Reported by Simeon Maganga
