Malcolm Xs Message to the Grassroots and the Haitian Revolution - The Haitian Times In his Message, Malcolm X prescribed that Blacks unite to ward off this common enemy who continues to hold us in economic, political, and psychological bondage. He enjoined African-Americans to secure their own land; and he pressed for a revolution to secure African-American sovereignty. For Malcolm X, the best and only way to acquire land, sovereignty, and ward off this common enemy permanently is by revolution. Evidently, in his near flawless elocution, Malcolm X mentioned various revolutions in Africa, such as the Mau Mau’s in Kenya along with the American, French, Russian,Chinese and Cuban revolutions. However, given his Caribbean roots and his parents’ involvement with the Marcus Garvey movement, Malcolm X failed to recall and broach the most significant global revolution in the 19th century: the Haitian Revolution. Given that the Haitian Revolution, according to Caribbean scholar Tony Martin in his The Pan-African Connection: From Slavery to Garvey and Beyond, inspired countless Black leaders, including Malcolm X, it is an imperative that we ensure that the Haitian Revolution is an essential part of the global Black revolutionary movement. The Haitian Revolution along with other successful African revolutionary movements should be the anchor for our quest for unity, sovereignty, and power. -Patrick Delices haitiantimes/50th-anniversary-malcolm-x-message-grassroots/ via Harvard Haitian Alliance
