Maleficent: For people who watched Disneys Sleeping Beauty and thought Yeah, okay, but what if the villain was boring? THATS the movie I wanna see! The story is clunky and lacks characterization. Every character, Maleficent included, is a cardboard cut out with zero amount of emotional pull. The visuals have absolutely zero impact which is amazing considering its based on one of Disneys more stylistically original animated films. Even the scenes (more like scene really) that are ripped straight from the original movie lack punch. The art direction is your standard half assed Alice in Ozland the Great and Powerful. Jeezy creezy Disney can you not afford Brian Fround or someone from Henson to design your movies? Theres a reason the art direction from movies like Dark Crystal are remembered and its not because they pulled their style from Tim Burtons clearance rack. But why be different when you can not try and still make millions of dollars? Shit sandwhich astes great! Ive read reviews saying that Jolies acting at least pulls through and, personally, I dont agree. I think she lets her make up and costuming do all the work. Eleanor Adley did more to put oomph behind Maleficent with just her voice than Jolie manages with no doubt thousands of dollars worth of costuming. And she is the best of the bad lot. At least she doesnt suck. The other actors are so bad I was filled with second hand embarassment for them. If you have to see it I say wait for rental, but really, you are missing nothing by skipping this lackluster piece of celluloid meh. Watch Sleeping Beauty instead. Its still awesome.
