Man, so many Active Self Protection lessons to learn here. So many angles to consider of an armed robbery that ends well for the good guys, but a news story that gives me an aneurysm. Lessons: 1. He was outdrawn and outgunned when they came in. Bad spot to be in with his back to the door like that, and right by the entrance. Try to think about where you want to be when the fight starts, then be there way before that. 2. I love that he said he wasnt going to be put on the ground. Thats the worst place for self-defense, and he wasnt going to go there. Good job! Avoid being proned out and put into a position where defense is impossible. 3. He waited for his opportunity. That was very, very wise. He knew he had to wait until the time came when he could seize the initiative and he did just that. Find the opportunity so that you have the advantage. 4. He wasnt charged, but realize that the family is still looking at other avenues and publicizing that he did the wrong thing. Nevermind that her reasoning is so ludicrous that it never should have made it to the air. There will be a social price to pay for defending yourself, so be ready for it. 5. The perp will alway be the nicest kid ever in history. They will spin him into a choir boy who was a good boy and youre terrible. If that was the case the kid wouldnt have been robbing a Waffle House with a gun. Attitude. Skills. Plan.
