Mankind never learns by their mistakes, It is very important that everyone does their best to protect the natural environment from the humble dandelion to the great oak. On Sept. 1, 1914, the last passenger pigeon in the world died. The passenger pigeon was slightly larger than the pigeons in our parks today. Its feathers were described as iridescent. Billions of passenger pigeons lived in North America when European explorers arrived. They migrated in huge flocks each year. One early 19th-century description said the pigeons were flying overhead for three full days, blocking the sun. Some people complained back then that the pigeons fouled land and water with their waste, ate crops--and so many landed in a tree, the branches broke. Farmers and their families stayed in their houses when passenger pigeons migrated. Scientists today say men hunting birds was not the only reason the birds are extinct. It was probably the clearing of forests that cut off the birds supply of acorns and other nuts.
