Many of us will agree that the most abused word that was used during the election campaign after politics was secular(sickular for many).There were blames flying high and low about the presence or rather absence of secularism in some parties. But what exactly is secularism?I came across the most apt way to understand this concept while going through an event in the life of Srimati Indira Gandhi which can be better described as the aftermath of operation blue-star.Her security team reached the conclusion that as there is widespread hatred among the Sikhs for her and a majority of her bodyguards belonged to the same religious group,it would be better to get rid of them thus to ensure her safety.But when the proposal was put in front of her she rejected it outright and laid emphasis on the point that she being the head of a SECULAR state can not let anyones religious identity influence her behavior towards them.This decision cost us the loss of an excellent prime-minister but her willingness to be more faithful to the constitution than to her own self makes her more special. #watching_pradhanmantri
