Mark George on why liberal Christians need to actually read the Bible: Weve got to read these texts. Theres lots in the texts that I dont like. They challenge my modern sensibility. But if I dont read them, if I dont study them, if I dont *own* the texts in my tradition... somebody else will. And they are going to talk about them in ways that I disagree with. But since I dont know the texts, I wont know what to do with them. One thing I hear a lot from liberal Christians is that they do not think they have a problem with violence and the Bible. This, they think, is just a conservative problem. But if liberal Christians dont read and dont know the Bible (and quoting it in the liturgy does not count) then those conservative Christians are the ones who end up defining the terms.
