Marsabit schools still closed after clans fight Schools are yet to reopen in Marsabit nearly a fortnight after raids in which at least 10 people Schools are yet to reopen in Marsabit nearly a fortnight after raids in which at least 10 people died. Most parents were displaced, and several of them crossing into Ethiopia with their children. Others are staying in the nearby Moyale town or in areas not affected by the skirmishes. PARENTS RUNNING AWAY “Most of these parents were running away for their safety and it is not easy to establish where they are,” area education officer Galm Golicha told the Nation Thursday. Mr Golicha said schools like Kuro, Helliu, Manyatta Oddah, Al Huda and St Mary’s Primary may remain closed as their locality is still deserted. These areas have remained abandoned since the battle between Boranas and Gabras started last month. Areas like Manyatta Burji and Helliu, which are both in the outskirts of Moyale Town, are still volatile. Several houses were burnt to the ground and owners have to rebuild them if they are to return. Most of these houses — some of them modern mansions — belonged to members of the Borana community, now internally displaced. In turn, their warriors burnt down most of the shops and other businesses belonging to Burji traders in Sessi on the Kenya-Ethiopia border. KCPE CANDIDATES The area had several go-downs and stores where goods sold in shops in Moyale Town were kept. A school like Sessi Academy, which has been one of the best performers in KCPE, was reduced to a shell. “Our worry is what to do with KCPE candidates,” manager Dan Odede lamented. #dailynation
