Marshall 45 - Florida International 13 The Thundering Herd crushed the FIU Panthers’ rebellion with 45 consecutive points in a 45-13 victory before a homecoming crowd of 13,163 at FIU Stadium. FIU opened the scoring with a 13 play, 80 yard drive that spanned 5:31 late in the first. McGough converted a 24 yard pass to Jonnu Smith on 3rd and 14, then Alex Gardner rushed for 14 yards to convert another third down later in the march. McGoughs 1-yard plunge into the end zone gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead. Devon Johnson started the ensuing Marshall series with a 71 yard run. Three plays later, Cato hooked up with Ryan Yurachek from a yard out to tie the game and extended his touchdown pass streak to 39 games, giving him the all time NCAA record after a week of sharing it with Russell Wilson. “Its a blessing, in front of all my family,” said Cato, a Liberty City native. “I saw all my nieces and nephews. My daughter was here. My uncles came from all the way out of town. My grandfather was here. It was a lot of people here. It was a blessing that I could perform in front of all those guys. It was a team effort for all 39 games and we still got more games to play, weve got to keep finding a way to find seven points.” This game was also the ninth time straight Cato threw for at least four touchdowns in a game. He has thrown for 110 scores in his career, by far the most among all active quarterbacks. How about Cato? asked a smiling Thundering Herd coach Doc Holliday. I mean, its a record that may never be broken. Thats a heck of a record. If anyone deserves it, that young man does. And to be able to come down here to Miami and do that in front of his family, 15 minutes from where he grew up, that was huge. Cato also passed Byron Leftwich for No. 2 on Marshalls career passing list. With 12,088 yards, hes behind only Chad Pennington (13,143) for the school record. Ricardo Williams blocked Austin Taylors 38-yard field goal attempt on FIUs next touch, then Marshall ran off 38 straight points to turn the game into another drubbing. Next week Marshall hosts the Florida Atlantic Owls at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Game time 3:30 pm.
