Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest figures in the American Civil Rights Movement. He was a Baptist Preacher, and Civil Rights Activist, best known for his public speaking skills. Dr King was able to use his abilities as an orator to bring about great change in American Society. Dr. King was able to motivate thousands to take a stand in nonviolent protest and civil disobedience to advance the cause of equality for all in the United States. Dr King’s most famous speech was the I Have a Dream Speech given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. The speech was originally written in homage to Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The Gettysburg Address was delivered a few months after the end of the Civil War. It announced the birth of a new freedom that would bring about equality for all citizens, as called for in the declaration of independence and framed the Civil war as not just a conflict over slavery but a struggle for the goal of human equality. Dr King’s I have a dream speech was a call for an end to racism and equal opportunity that still existed a century later.
