Martin commented: Because large sections of American society still cling to the belief that the world is only 6 K years old and tragically still believe that it was created by a supernatural force in only 6 days, as related in the Bible, instead of studying the evidence as presented by Charles Darwin and other evolutionary biologists that the world is billions of years old and that the world was not created in the hand of such a deity but through the force of the Big Bang and billions of years of development ever since. The Bible Belt in the southern states still teaches creationism, no wonder the poor indoctrinated schoolchildren tend to reject the very notion of a scientific outlook on life, instead of studying for themselves the true origins of the planet and indeed of human kind. Of course, these poorer states in the Bible Belt tend to vote time and again for Republican candidates, Florida perhaps being the only exception. Poverty and politics naturally play a role in this development, but they are so intrinsically linked to religion that we point the finger of blame fair and square at religion and its very basic core guiding motive of keeping people in their place. The poll finding hardly comes as a surprise.
