Masiaka. Nov. 26 (SLENA) – The Principal of the Sierra Leone Foundation Secondary School in Masiakagirl child education, Port Loko District, Mr. Martin Sesay has said that the country’s girl child education project faces serious challenges in that part of the district. Speaking to SLENA over the weekend in Masiaka, Mr. Sesay said apart from the fact that there are few qualified teachers in Masiaka town, there is the mushrooming of educational institutions all over in the Koya chiefdom with lack of basic educational facilities. He said poverty aside, which is responsible for the huge dropout of girl children, principals most often refused to admit girls with old ages including those with huge breasts but will instead admit suckling girl-mothers in their schools. Mr. Sesay said the apparent deteriorating trend recently caused the MP of the area to advise the police in Masiak, the FSU (Family Support Unit) in particular and the chiefdom authorities to conduct a chiefdom sensitization meeting to be chaired by the Paramount chief in order to sensitize stakeholders on the legal implication of child abuse and the human rights violation of the girl child. On a more positive note, however, Mr. Sesay said his school is now doing remarkably well compared to what obtained two years ago before assuming the mantle of leadership in the school. In this year’s BECE exams, he said his school had more than 89 passes with five subjects and above. He however complained that the school playing has been converted into a rubbish dump site and the local authorities remain indifferent to the situation. “The pupils are planning a strike action if no action is taken to stop people turning their field into a garbage site,” he warned.
