Master of Environmental Law The Environmental Law Programme is pleased to offer the Master of Environmental Law (MEL). The MEL is a rich and diverse programme offering a uniquely South Pacific perspective on environmental law and policy, ocean issues, sustainable development, climate change and biodiversity. MEL students come from a range of disciplines and the programme is designed to be flexible to cater to the needs of both full-time and part-time students. Master of Environmental Law Regulations (2013) Admission Requirements: To be admitted to the Master of Environmental Law Programme a person shall have: (a) An LLB or equivalent degree with a GPA of 3.5 or better or a USP LLB with a GPA of 3.0 or better and either LA326/LW390 passed with a grade of B+ or better, or professional or research experience deemed to be equivalent to such a grade in LA326/LW390; or (b) Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than Law with a GPA of 3.5 or better and evidence of professional or research experience in areas of environmental law, environmental science or environmental planning; or (c) In exceptional cases candidates must demonstrate that they have the experience or achievement relevant to the MEL programme, which Senate or its delegate deems sufficient for undertaking the programme. Programme Requirements: a) The MEL Programme by coursework consists of 6 x 400 LW courses: LW452; plus three 400-level LW courses selected from the following: LW450, LW451, LW453, LW455, LW456 or another environmental law course; plus two 400-level courses offered by USP and approved by the Head of School. b) The MEL Programme by coursework consists of 4 x 400-level LW courses) and a supervised research project: LW452; plus three 400-level LW courses selected from the following: LW450, LW451, LLW453, LW455, LW456 or another environmental law course; plus a Supervised Research Project. Current Courses: LW405 Graduate Legal Research Methods LW430 Public International Law LW452 Regional Environmental Law LW453 International Environmental Law LW455 Law of the Sea LW456 Maritime Law LW495 Special Topic: International Fisheries Law LW495 Special Topic: Climate Change Law In addition, the ELP offers a number of courses taught by visiting environmental law scholars. These courses vary from year to year. MEL students are also encouraged to include one or more courses from the general postgraduate law offerings at the School of Law, and/or postgraduate offerings at the School of Marine Studies, Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development and School of Government, Development and International Affairs, for example: • Environmental Economics • Environmental Law and Corporate Regulation • Planning and Environmental Law • Human Rights Law • Development Studies • Trade Law and the Environment • Traditional Knowledge and the Environment • Environmental Law and Globalization • Environmental Dispute Resolution • Natural Resources Law • Customary Law Program fees A list of program fees is available here.
