Match Report 19/10/13 HIW 4 – Wellington Inn 1 Hole I’th Wall carried on their impressive league form with a solid victory over the Wellington. There were several players missing this week, but we still had a strong squad and team. Despite a bad back Ben was fit enough to start in goal; at the back, Liam replaced FOD at left back and Harrison returned alongside Matt Ashton, and Shane started at Right back. Jay moved into his more usual place on the right wing, alongside a midfield of Cooper, Tom and Wes. Upfront Shearer and Fishy got the nod, leaving a bench of FOD, Kenyon, Tom Steele and myself. Despite concerns we started on our usual pitch and came out the blocks flying, and nearly scored with our first attack. It did not take long though, after a Welly attack we broke with pace and accuracy, passing and interlinking working the ball into Shearers path and he confidently strode onto it and placed his shot past the keeper; only five minutes gone and 1-0 up. The goal gave the side confidence and we continued passing the ball about well. Wellington attacked on the break and had a couple of chances with the defence appealing for offside unsuccessfully on most of them. We continued to play good football keeping the ball on the floor using our wingers, and more chances came our way, Jay had a good chance and Fishy was unlucky with a header, Shearer had a chance for a second, it started to look like it could be one of those days but we kept going and got our reward. On the half hour mark a spell of passing and interlink between our attackers saw the ball come to Fishy who showed good close control on the edge of their 18 yard box before firing home. At 2-0 HIW were cruising and tackles started to fly in from Welly, who were also getting agitated with each other. Ben had a couple of shots to field but all were straight at him with nothing testing him fully. Cooper and Tom were up for the challenge in the middle, and for every tackle thrown at one of our players they were snapping and snarling with their challenges. Before half time it was three nil, Captain for the game Jay had terrorised their full back with his running and intelligent link up play between full back, midfield and strikers. He had already dragged one chance wide when breaking into the box, and this goal was no classic poking home from close range, but after his recent bad luck in front of goal we all hope this can be the first of many. Half time came and the only thing to do was ask that we all carry on playing in the same way with a few tweaks at the back to close down the Welly’s chances. After the fast and furious pace we had maintain for the first half we slowed down the pace of the game and appeared content to see out the game, defending our clean sheet and still posing a threat but without the urgency. FOD came on for Wes who had been flying early in the game before a heavy challenge seemed to take some wind from his sails. Shortly after Kenyon came on for a tired looking Jay as we again looked to expose the potential of our wings. Chances came and went and the two up front continued to work tirelessly for the team, but all over the park it was good to see everybody willing to go that extra yard for each other. Liam came off allowing Wes to go back on the wing with FOD dropping back. With ten minutes to go Fishy gave way and allowed Tom Steele’s first appearance of the season. The extra breather appeared to work for Wes as he was suddenly picking the ball up and running at players again, he had won a few freekick’s before one mazy run was ended in the penalty box, with the ref pointing to the spot. Several players wanted it but Cooper was the appointed penalty taker, but whilst I was distracted on the side-lines, goal keeper Ben had discussions with club captain FOD and strode forward to take it. It was a great penalty driven low and hard; a little cheeky, but people keep trying to point out we do play for fun. It made it 4-0 with minutes to go and was our eleventh goal scorer of the season in six games. I could mention a terrible referee for both sides, but would rather focus on the great team ethic and work rate. It went right through the squad and included everyone on the bench, including FOD, dropped but responding in the right method with no arguing just a desire to get on and play his way into team.
