Match report from todays 1st team game The 1st team bounced back today with a win at home to Eastrington after a disappointing performance away at HICE last week. The side that took the field featured two changes without the in form Preston and Dickinson replaced by Hall and T. McConnell. It wasn’t seen as a bad thing when the Eastrington skipper put us in on what looked a decent track at Well Lane. The two Andys got us off to a good start with both of them looking solid until Andy Russell hit one straight to mid-wicket off the bowling of spinner Chatham. With Kallum “slogger” Cudbertson next in the scoring rate was bound to rise, and it did with Kallum batting aggressively including one shot that sailed onto the road. When Andy Mac played on whilst on 25 the signs were still pointing towards a big score with plenty of wickets in hand and a good base set by the top 3. This wicket brought another attacking batsman to the crease in new boy Paul Bowater who batted nicely and you could see loves the sweep shot with that being his chosen stroke for quite a lot of his innings with not all finding the middle of the bat, one even found his helmet! After Slogger and Paul had departed it left a decent platform at 101-4 but that is when the typical Kirkella middle order collapse ensued with only Big Phil and T.Wilkie making it past 10. Skip missed a full toss and was stumped; Big Phil missed a straight one. Howie hit one onto his pad and was given out LBW! Col smashed one straight down long on’s throat, Wilkie was run out when trying to take one that was never there and Tom Mac got a leading edge straight down mid offs throat. This left Statto stranded with one over to go. We went from 101-3 to 142 all out. At tea that looked distinctly under par as both the openers had said par was around 180-200, so we knew we had some work to do in the field! We started well in the field with the new ball partnership of Howard and Col bowling well and this lead to them removing both their inform batsman with 14 on the board with good catches from keeper Andy Russell and T.Wilkie, then when the number 3 chipped one straight back to Howie with the score on 20 we were right in the game! After that there was a bit of a lull as Eastrington’s 4 and 5 built a partnership but with the introduction of Wilkie that all changed, first he had Kendall caught behind then a couple of overs later removed the danger man Gary Tooke for 43. The next over Col then removed numbers 8 and 9 to leave Eastrington reeling at 77-7, and mini revival was then broken by the returning Howard who had Neil Tooke LBW at the third time of asking! With Wilkie claiming his third wicket it was left to slogger to show his abilities with the ball, and break the last wicket stand clean bowling their number 10. A good win overall, and a good performance in the field. With it being so close in mid-table at the moment those 20 points could seriously help us avoid getting sucked into the fight at the bottom of the league. The 1st team will look to build on that as next week they travel to 4th in the table Hessle for another big game.
