#Mavericky: Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) wouldve been 90 years old today. A ferocious orator, in an era that had many, she served New York as a Congresswoman from 1969-1983. In January 1972 she became one of the first women to run a serious campaign for the presidency (although outsider parties have been nominating women since the 1800s). Democrats ended up nominating McGovern, who instead of making Chisholm his running-mate and making history, went with Eagleton, who was eliminated by scandal; he then went with Sargent Shriver, one of the least-qualified major nominees of all-time, and they went on to take one of the worst beatings in presidential election history, which they deserved.
