(Mawkish post warning) The two days I spent in Luhansk felt - TopicsExpress

(Mawkish post warning) The two days I spent in Luhansk felt like the most horrible of all the horrible stories of the past few months. Dead people are dead, but people who lived in a quiet, peaceful backwater and suddenly found their lives torn apart by war and absolutely everything they had taken away from them, that is hard to take. But in a weird way it was also the most uplifting story. East Ukraine has shown how easy it is to use poverty and propaganda to whip up imaginary hatreds and violence and how amazingly fragile society and normality are. But the aftermath also shows how there are some people who refuse to accept the breakdown of society, and through sheer force of personality work to bring it together again. Two of those people were Anatoly Turevich and Valentina Kiyashko, quoted here. Incredible people doing incredible work when others would have quite understandably run away. So impressive.
