“Max Patch Mountain in Pisgah National Forest” Take I-40 exit 7 (Harmon Den) in NC. Turn left at the end of the ramp. Follow the gravel road several miles until you come to an unmarked fork in the road. Turn left and continue until you come to the parking area of Max Patch Mountain. You can’t miss the mountain because it is the big grassy place with hundreds of acres of bald. We arrived while it was still sunny until the clouds rolled over the mountain but that actually made our trip more spectacular. This is a great side trip while visiting the Smokies.
