May is Motorcycle Awareness Month!! The Law Office of Jackie Rose Kruger is taking the opportunity to remind the public to safely share California’s roads with motorcyclists. At this time of year, local law enforcement officials and hospitals consistently see more motorcycle-related accidents and injuries. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 80 percent of motorcyclists who are involved in a collision are injured or killed. Sadly, a good number of these accidents occur because other drivers simply aren’t paying attention. The CHP also link the increase in motorcycle accidents to the summer months because there are more motorcycles on the roads enjoying the weather conditions. Additionally, with the skyrocketing gas prices many drivers have been forced to look for more fuel efficient vehicles (motorcycles are known to provide between 40 and 50mpg!!) Safety Tips: First remember that Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway. During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May – and during the rest of the year – drivers of all other vehicles and all road users are reminded to safely “share the road” with motorcyclists, and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. • Always allow more distance while following a motorcycle. • Be extra cautious at intersections. Most crashes occur when a motorist fails to see a bike making a turn. • Never try to share a lane with a motorcycle. Both cars and motorcycles should have a full lane for room to maneuver.
