Maybe I can help some folks out here. There is NO SUCH THINK AS POP PUNK. It doesnt exist. Never did. Punk rock erupted in the mid 70s as the direct spastic reaction AGAINST the highly calculated sickly sweetness of pop. Pop music had, and still does have, calculated chord and harmony structures. Punk did not. Pop had, and still does have, pretty people as the focus of the art. Punk does not. Blink 182, Sum 41, Good Charlotte are all good rock bands. Pop bands. Just not punk bands. At a thirty year retrospective of punk styles in N.Y., Johnny Lydon made these points abundantly clear to pop rocker Billy Joe Armstrong. Punk tried, and some say failed, to destroy the process of putting labels on rock music. You may feel the need to tell people what you are through a label for your band. Punk does not.
