Maybe its because Im growing tired of rewriting very similar prompts to fit very different length constraints - or maybe its because I feel like a question asking something extremely personal yet casual warrants a response that is not quite as formal. In the interest of giving my professional advisors a break from my narcotic emails asking for critical evaluation of my writing sample (thanks again b-t-dubs)... here you go Facebook friends: 8. Please tell us about your favorite recreational/leisure activities (500 words or less) One of the more involved changes to my life recently has been my adoption of a rescue pup. My (now one-year old) Jack Russell mix is one of the most charismatic, adventurous, and undeniably lovable creatures I have ever encountered. On a daily basis, she (Riesling, aka Reese) keeps me on my toes with an energy that truly reflects a spirit of “I’m thrilled to be alive!” The responsibilities of pet adoption, though not completely foreign to me, have put into perspective the needs of one’s dependents. Even though Reese is not human, she is my child - and quite frankly, I’m thrilled to have this mischievous little personality in my life. Among Reese’s favorite pastimes is testing my focus and stability when I practice yoga at home. I started taking yoga classes at Sunstone Yoga in Dallas in November of 2013 as part of my regiment toward better physical fitness. I typically try to attend three to four one-hour sessions per week; however, with two jobs and the anklebiter at home, it can be difficult to schedule these escapes. When I initiate a series of postures at home, my curious and tenacious little friend is ready at a moment’s notice to make sure my alignments are in check. After all, it really is quite difficult to hold a bent knee triangle for any given period - even more so with your dog trying to jump onto your outstretched leg. I like to think she’s instructing me in her own special way. Namaste, Riesling... namaste. When we aren’t discussing the merits of my ability to hold a standing split while she licks my nose-knee connection, Miss Reese thoroughly enjoys attending my weekly kickball games. She is an active cheerleader for my co-ed recreational-league team. She’s also one of my biggest critics. Without losing a beat, she pulls a quick shift from enthusiastic fan to demanding coach as she has become quite fond of demonstrating her disapproval by hiding her face in her paws when I make a lousy play. Again, thanks for the instruction kiddo. I will make sure to follow through on my stride next time. Finally, and most importantly, Riesling is an aspiring chef-instructor. By my side without hesitation, she evaluates my knife skills with a watchful eye. Unlike Gordon Ramsay, however, Reese is not a fan of messy floors. Any scrap that finds itself over the edge of the counter does not even make a sound on her spotless tile - she is adamant that it be caught mid-drop and sampled for quality assurance. I must be doing things correctly in my attempt to regularly cook nutritious and tasty morsels, she’s always ready for seconds. A day in the life of Riesling is one full of love, jumping, and naps. Every moment that I get to spend with my crazy rescue pup is the highlight of my leisure time.
